Weston Foods continues to modernize its bakery network with $25 million investment in tortillas, cupcakes and ice cream cones
(January 27, 2021) Weston Foods, a leading North American bakery company, continues to invest in its bakery network with a new high-speed tortilla line, a new mini ice cream cone line and a major line improvement at one of its cupcake bakeries. The investment in these growing segments, totaling almost CDN $25 million, has added new capabilities and improved productivity, while also leveraging the latest technology to deliver consistency with each delicious product.
“As we continue to add capacity and new capabilities to our network, we are always looking to enhance the taste and experience of our baked goods, while simultaneously further improving our ability to provide the consistency our customers rely on us for,” said Luc Mongeau, president of Weston Foods. “These investments deliver on all fronts.”
Pressed tortilla line
As makers of Casa Mendosa ™ , Wonder ® tortillas in Canada, and many other private label and foodservice brands, the company is investing in tortillas. Tortillas are one of the fastest growing bakery segments, with at home consumption increasing as consumers become more familiar with this versatile format. Installed last fall into the company’s 82,000 square foot Calgary-based bread and rolls bakery, the new high-speed line produces traditional pressed flour tortillas in a variety of sizes. The entirely new line includes a number of vision systems that ensure consistent shape, colour and size.
Upgraded cupcake line
Enhanced productivity and throughput as well as additional decorating and packaging capabilities are the result of an upgrade to one of the three lines at the company’s Manchester, New Hampshire 48,500 square-foot dedicated cupcake bakery. Originally installed in 2013, the line now runs 30% faster with improved accuracy and less waste. “Consumers eat with their eyes, especially with special occasion cupcakes,” said Mongeau. “Each delicious cake has to taste fantastic, of course, but also look appealing – the right amount of perfectly placed icing and sprinkles, properly displayed in the container. With the enhancements made at our Manchester bakery, we’re able to improve that important selection experience and deliver it consistently to our retail customers.
Mini ice cream cone line
Installed into the company’s Green Bay, Wisconsin novelty ice cream cone facility, the new line produces 60-millimeter mini sugar cones. The high-speed line, which can produce a variety of flavours, includes a new oven for forming and baking as well as a new packaging area for the smaller cones.
“Unlike other categories, our customers use our cones as a key ingredient when making their frozen dessert treats. With this new line, we’ve been able to expand our size variety in answer to a consumer trend for portion control while enjoying an indulgent treat,” said Mongeau. “The new line allows us to create mini-cones with high-speed uniformity, as the consistency of size, taste, texture and quality are essential for our customers to be able to operate efficiently.”
